Cinderella and Four Knights is finally here! Yayyy! This kdrama was like an orphan for a while with no broadcast station to air it so I was happy when tvN finally rescued it and picked it up. I’m quite excited.
If you like Cinderella stories and flower boy chaebols, then this drama is the perfect guilty pleasure for you.
Cinderella and Four Knights Trailer
Here’s a mishmash of one trailer and some previews. I suppose there are spoilers but trust me, you’ll just wonder how all these scenes get to happen. LOL.
Cinderella and Four Knights Summary
Eun Ha-Won (Park So-Dam) doesn’t know it but she’s a modern-day Cinderella. Her family appears middle class and she lives with her stepmother and stepsister in a small apartment.
They shove her off to the balcony to sleep, eat whatever’s good themselves, and don’t allot any college tuition for Ha-Won which is why Ha-Won works her ass off in her 10 part-time jobs to earn college tuition money.
On the other side of the spectrum are our third generation chaebol heirs.
Ji-Woon (Jung Il-Woo) was an orphan who was recently brought into the family. He is antagonistic towards Grandpa (Kim Yong-Geon) who is head of the family and their vast business empire.
Hyun-Min (Ahn Jae-Hyeon) is the recognized heir but he is a playboy who does whatever he wants. When he breaks up with a woman, he gives them one last wish or parting gift.
Lastly, Seo-Woo (Lee Jung-Shin) is a well-known musician who seems to genuinely love his music.
Forced to live together in Sky Mansion, they are unable to see eye to eye which is why Grandpa suddenly has the inspired idea to recruit Ha-Won to be their live-in butler in Sky House with the hopes of changing the ways of the three spoiled princes.
And the fourth knight? Grandpa’s butler, of course.
Cinderella and Four Knights Trivia
Netizens were excited to hear of beloved Jung Il-Woo appearing once again in a drama. JIW has the unfortunate penchant of choosing dramas or projects that don’t do well as hoped. In fact, the last I’ve seen him in a relatively good drama was Flower Boy Ramen Shop. I fangirled so much for him and his OTP! (I should write a review for that Show since I mention it so much!)
Park So-Dam, in the meantime, comes off a series of hits and well-known dramas. She won Best New Actress for The Priest (which I plan to watch once I stop being a scaredy cat) and starred in Beautiful Mind which many drama fans call underrated.
Next up, we know Ahn Jae-Hyeon from Blood. I didn’t watch that show but he got a beating for taking on a lead role despite being such a newbie. Interestingly, his loveline Ku Hye-Sun with his lead actress became real and they registered their marriage in May 2016.
Show’s musician is actually Lee Jung-Shin of CNBLUE. This is one casting where an idol-actor is welcome, I think.
And my final trivia is something that is very close to my heart. While a lot of drama fans compare the story to Boys Over Flowers, I’d have to say it’s closer to the Japanese drama Atashinchi no Danshi (My Boys – More Than Family But Less Than Lovers).
In this drama, the head of the family finds and helps homeless Chisato out of debt. As repayment, she has to be “mother” to his six sons living in Trick Heart Castle. Although initially estranged from each other, they start to warm to Chisato and fall for her whilst creating the family that their father wished.
(Man, I shipped her so hard with Osamu Mukai bwahahahaha!)
Now doesn’t that sound like Cinderella and Four Knights?
Cinderella and Four Knights Initial Impression
Heol. I enjoyed the first two eps a lot! Was it original? Course not. Was it groundbreaking? Nope! Was it a lot of fun? HECK YEAH.
I found myself chuckling a lot during the first two episodes. It was enjoyable, which is more than can be said for other dramas airing right now. Show knows it’s super silly and doesn’t pretend to be otherwise.
Somebody in the forums even described it as refreshing. It’s amazing, but it does feel that way. I’m actually scratching my head right now.
No promises that I can do commentaries on time but here’s my best effort: 🙂
Warning: Spoilers ahead!
Episodes 1 and 2
I’m already dying of Second Lead Syndrome
Ahn Jae-Yeon makes Hyun-Min so charming instead of repulsive. At the hands of a lesser flower boy, this character would just make me vomity. But Hyun-Min is so much eye candy! (And this from this ajhumma who’s seen TOO much eye candy already for 1 lifetime.)
And the funnier thing is, Hyun-Min is such a hoot! He looks so model-handsome but when he’s with Ha-Won, his conversation is sooo funny. He’s such an adorable idiot!
Writer-Nim! Can’t second lead get the girl this time??? Please!!!
Can’t wait for the friendship between Ha-Won and Seo-Woo
He seems like a genuinely good guy. I mean, he has to be to feel bad for Ha-Won getting such vile texts from evil stepsister. I can’t wait for the two to become close friends. Will he fall for her? I wonder.
(Will add pics later when these two interact more.)
Cinderella feels real. Great acting by Park So-Dam.
I can’t tell you any particular scene where So-Dam did anything out of the ordinary. It’s just that Ha-Won felt real to me. Her pain and her suffering… she felt like a real person I knew and could root for. Actually, I teared up a lot during the Show which is amazing given how caricature-ish Show is. You can only do that with an actress so good, she can bring her super stereotypical character to life whatever the circumstances.
On hindsight, I realize now that the music in key parts of SHow was great too. Just rewatched this scene and I was bawling again.
And just to repeat, Show is silly.
It’s really really silly. Don’t expect otherwise. I was laughing so hard when Grandpa was telling Ha-Won about his boys. The video shown came straight out of their promo clips. I mean, how did they get that footage? LOL.
Despite all that, the FEELS are real.
OMG. That closing scene where all the boys arrive and the butler says dating is not allowed.
And the boys are coming from all corners? Hah! HAH! YEAH RIGHT, BUDDY.
I will be posting weekly commentaries. If only to squee on my favorite pair. Bwahahaha!
Episodes 3 and 4
Yehesss! Cinderella and Four Knights continues to be a fun watch. I’m kinda getting a beating for liking this Show but what the heck! Respect!
So far, here’s why I think Cinderella has as many fans as it has:
- Cinderella and Four Knights is the quintessential modern Cinderella story. You’ve got 4 hot guys around her and she is physically and mentally strong. Perfect set-up.
- We all want to be Cinderella. You can profess equality of the sexes or whatever, but beautiful boys, home, clothes, cars, and shoes don’t hurt.
- Show knows how to make us happy with the squee-worthy moments and teasers.
- Satisfactory acting all around.
I enjoyed Cinderella so much it’s embarrassing. That is, I’d get embarrassed if my favorite cousin J isn’t messaging me as furiously in Facebook too. Glad to be in good company!
Some funny things from Cinderella-lovers:
- We’re all suffering from 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th lead syndrome!
- Fans can stomach Ha-Won ending up with anybody (even the butler); just NOT with Ji-Woon!
- Hye-Ji is the REAL evil stepsister in the story. She’s worse than the actual sister!
The real sister has so far been harmless. Or there to satisfy our evil selves. Karma! Puahahaha!
Rather than reveals or insights, I am faced with some ugly truths this week.
Will Hyun-Min ever fall for Ha-won? For real?
I have to face some sad things today about my favorite pair — Ha-Won and Hyun-Min.
Okay, let’s get this unfortunate truth out. Hyun-Min loves Hye-Ji. The new Dramabeans recapper got it wrong when she said that Hyun-Min was smitten at delivery girl Ha-Won at the club where she beat up a couple of guys. Nah, def not smitten. Piqued his interest maybe, or found a new toy, yes. But smitten? Too far a reach.
All the signs have been pointing to Hyun-Min having real feelings for Hye-Ji. Only, maybe due to some misunderstanding in the far past, Hyun-Min decided to keep his distance from his childhood friend and keep up his Cassanova ways as a front.
Last week, the Hyun-Min and Ha-Won scenes made me ship them so hard. Only, this week, I realized that it was Hyun-Min still operating in Cassanova mode. Dressing Ha-Won up, buying her a house, saying swoony things… these are all just regular SOP for Playboy Hyun Min. The REAL Hyun Min who is in love with his childhood friend is buried far far below the surface.
Still, I DO want to believe that he is liking Ha-Won more than he actually thinks he does. I mean, for Pete’s sakes, he DREAMT of her. He dreamt they were kissing!
Also, he found his usual parade of girls suddenly shallow and insipid. Can’t eat heartily? Can’t pack a punch?
Suddenly, he’s looking for Ha-Won in the company he keeps. Which is actually really really good and possibly signaling some form of growth for Hyun-Min.
Still, he has a long ways to go if he still sees Ha-Won as some object he has to squabble with with Ji-Woon. So yeah, I’m confused.
Or maybe, this is where the Writer-Nim is taking us. That in their journey, Hyun-Min will find his way to Hye-Ji while Ji-Woon will find his way to Ha-Won. Because…
Ji-Woon might stand a better chance of falling for reals with Ha-Won
Yeah, kill me. I hate Ji-Woon. I really do. I wish he and Hye-Ji just ride off in the sunset together and disappear so that Hyun-Min can fall for our gal.
But no. How so?
Ji-Won’s feelings for Hye-Ji appear to be anchored to her kindness to him. Case in point, his memory of Hye-Ji covering him up with her jacket. And though Ji-Woon might not believe me if I were to tell this to his face, but I don’t think he’s in love with her for real. I think he’s just starving for affection and kindess at this point that he’s latched on to Hye-Ji.
Meanwhile, in the process of trying to remove Ha-Won from Hyun-Min’s side, he’ll grow real feelings for the spunky, down-to-earth Ha-Won.
Don’t like what I’m gabbing about? Yeah, so do I.
(And let’s not forget that bouquet. Very revealing that it was only Ji-Woon who waded in the water for Ha-Won. Great job covering up though by being such a jerk.)
Gah. I much prefer the Cinderella story of our gal shattering the playboy’s game and having him fall silly in love with her. Because I swear to the goddess, they are so so cute together!
Can I be wrong, please?
Just episode 4 and I’m already worried. Ugh. I’ll just enjoy the ride.
Happily, Seo-Woo and Yoon-Sung are there for Ha-Won and they are simply adorbs. Really, thank you for being there, guys! At least, no alpha male fights for you.
Drama friends, I’ll end with this note. Don’t you think that kiss between Ha-Won and Hyun-Min was so hawt?!! Chalk up another pair for “better-kissers-in-kdramaland”.
Let my ship sail, drama-gods…
