Becoming vegan? Going on a “No meat, No grain” challenge? I never thought I would ever take this path, but as a matter of self-preservation here I am.
Again, all my efforts are not for losing weight. I am trying to repair my body.
A year ago, I was diagnosed with calcific tendonitis (buildup of calcium in my shoulder joints), cervical spondylosis (neck arthritis), spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), and carpal tunnel.
My specialist said it was impossible to reverse the degeneration of my bones and muscle. And as we are apt to do, I believed my doctor. That is, till one person (my angel, Kelly Colby) told me the body can repair itself. That is, till I saw Arthur Boorman also prove his doctors wrong. That was when I began to hope.
And because I have a notoriously poor memory, I am keeping this blog entry to document the highlights of my wellness journey.

I am retrenched from work. I sleep, eat, and rest. My body starts healing itself.
The very first time I met my gym trainer many many years ago, he told me to quit my job. I didn’t of course. How else would I pay all my bills including his pricey hourly fees? Seven years later, I realize, he had the answer all along. Still, I loved my work “beary” much while I had it.
After getting retrenched, I decided to take a well-deserved break. I started sleeping nights again, resting, and eating on time. I slept so deeply the first few months. My chronic pain seeped away slowly. I was 95% pain free. The entire story HERE.

Excruciating pain on both my hands. From my wrist to my fingers. Could neither type nor work for one week.
I was finally mostly pain-free and working freelance peacefully at home. And then, one day, I felt intense pain in both my hands. I could hardly move my hands and fingers from the pain.
The pain wasn’t going away even after 7 days of rest and medication. Finally, I got over my fear and started taking DMSO and MSM orally. The pain immediately went away. Wonders!
What caused it? I wasn’t working too hard. I had not damaged my hands. The only thing that changed was that I drank LOTS of cow’s milk at night and ate LOTS of pork (fried and roasted) every day. My physiatrist scoffed at this when I mentioned it though.
Whatever. After this incident, I ate less pork and went back to soy milk.

My friend and mentor Kelly Colby enjoins me to take a “No Meat, No Grain” challenge for 30 days.
My motivation: This guy Herb who after going vegan for 4 months has had his spinal stenosis pain vanish, carpal tunnel down by 50%. He can also walk for 45 minutes now instead of the 15 minutes he used to.
Is Herb real? Real or not, he sparked a question in my mind. What will happen if I go vegan for 4 months, is what I want to know. EXCITED!

Waited till the spate of birthdays were done, and then took on Kelly’s “No Meat, No Grain” challenge
Whenever I thought with my brain, I simply could not accept not eating meat and grain. I thought, that’s impossible for me. I’m Asian, for goodness sake! We eat rice 3 times a day. Sometimes even for a snack. However, I stopped thinking about it and just went for it!

Big bad headaches. Detoxing?
I had headaches the entire day. Am I detoxing? I don’t know. Come night, I couldn’t stand it anymore and drink ACV – two tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar in a glass of warm water. It goes away. 🙂
I stick with my vegan-ish diet. I eat blended meals – 50% fruits and 50% veggies. I eat no meat. Instead, I eat tofu, sweet potatoes, potatoes, and bananas. I avoid processed food and fast food restaurants. I eat whole foods.

I ate meat today and felt AWFUL
Some surprising things I observed. Difficulty scale in removing from daily meals:
Meat (specially pork) – easy
Rice – so-so
Bread – surprisingly harder
I thought removing rice from my diet would kill me. It didn’t. Hardly any cravings. I substituted with tofu, bananas, and root crops, all of which I enjoy.
BIG SURPRISE. I am no bread person, but I get intense cravings for bread. Like, I just wanna stuff it down my mouth. Really intense urges.
Kelly says wheat is really bad for us. Looks like she’s right that it’s addictive! She says to read Wheat Belly and Grain Brain. (And nope I am not being paid to mention this. )

I manage one week of NO grain and no meat. I feel WONDERFUL.
No slip up days for one week. And wow, I feel wonderful. So light and alert. I don’t feel weakened, like naysayers might expect. BTW, I have lost weight.

As per my Lifestyle Transformation group, I stop eating at 80% full.
This is a Facebook group I joined. No, wait. I had to submit an application and got accepted into the group. It’s sort of a trial run by a really great health instructor.
From today, I am to stop eating when I feel 80% full. (It helps my brain catch up with my body in telling it that it’s actually full already.)
I can’t believe I am doing all these challenges all at the same time.

Huge acne all over my face. Now I am sure. I am detoxing.
I’ve never had acne as huge as these on my face. Kelly says my body is having difficulty getting toxins out via normal channels (like sweat, bowels, and urine) which is why it’s coming out of my face. She recommends dry skin brushing, epsom salt baths, salt flush, and enemas. I reactivate on the dry skin brushing. I continue to NOT eat meat except for the rare fish.
On the group project, I am doing well stopping at 80%. I simply portion my meals, and eat slowly. Eating at restaurants makes me slip up though.

Epsom baths are LOVE!
I got Epsom salt from Healthy Options and proceeded to take a warm Epsom bath. People just normally take cold showers where I live. Anyway, I ran a warm bath and mixed in a few drops of Orange essence oil. INSTALOVE! I still have some acne though despite skin brushing, two short kidney cleanses, and the Epsom bath. Moar epsom baths and an enema are in order!

Ran today with NO pain. I is surprised.
I am slowly losing the last remaining fat on my tummy. Now it’s time to build muscle. Goodness, I am sore today.
On the group project, we are on Daily Movement. It coincides perfectly with my fitness efforts. More yoga, JustDance, and Zumba.
But! Today, I ran. Without pain. A year ago, the specialist told me all cushioning is gone from my knees hence the pain. But look. No pain while running today! Is my body repairing itself???
Please, God, let it be my neck next. Will stick to my vegan-ism moar!

Amazingly, I continue to lose weight. Luke has told me to keep a food diary to find out what’s happening. If I were to guess, it’s just I do more Movement than Real Food. I am stepping up my game. MORE real food, and more bulking up exercise. This is an old, old wish of mine. To be lean, and muscled. Yeah!
Best time to do it now while I’m still freelance. 🙂
How about YOU? I’d love to hear what steps you’re taking for your health. Even the littlest things matter so it’s all good.
