Thanks to my Rich Man, Poor Woman hiatus, I’ve been trawling the new drama scene. There’s a lot that doesn’t resonate with me and I usually stop mid-stream in Episode 1 but happily enough, I stumbled upon 2 lovely gems.
When I first read about the synopsis of Sprout from Dramacrazy, the description was so hazy I gave it a pass over. I actually even got bored enough to read the manga but somehow, it still didn’t grip me that time. Fortunately, there came a day that I was just so dry for anything interesting that I decided to try the first Episode of Sprout.
And boy am I happy that I did! The first few minutes of Sprout sent my senses a-tingling. I sensed that I was onto a winner! It could have been my passion for cinematography when I was a film student or just my love of jdramas but the first scene where we see a young girl running across an empty field complete with poignant background music spoke to me. And with the ensuing remembrance of a cherished moment – of the young girl cowering ill on the steps of the same field, a hand extended, a slow, painful walk to the school clinic, and the sun-dazzled profile of a mysterious young man – the drama spoke to me that it would have meaning, cadence, and the everlasting charm of young love and youth.
The drama isn’t perfect but there’s a lot going for it. For me, it is a magical, somber, funny, and whimsical journey to discovery. I say, watch the first episode and see how it fits you.
To give you an idea, Sprout is a live action adaptation of a manga. It tells the story of Miku, a regular girl in highschool. She lives with her parents and has a good set of fun friends in school. Her life is ordinary and satisfactory until Souhei, one of the school’s most popular and good-looking student, comes looking for her and puzzles her with his, “I’ll be in your care!” complete with bow. Apparently, her father has just turned their house into a boardinghouse for students. But that’s not all. To complicate the plot is Souhei’s friend mysterious friend Hayato. But who is the boy who saved Miku one sunny day long ago?
Here is Miku meeting Souhei for the first time.
And just to let you know which lead I’m leaning towards. ;P
Here’s a fanvid for you to enjoy. Warning! Contains spoilers. Don’t watch if you don’t want spoilers. Now I have to go because Episode 8 is finally up!!
I want to hold somebody’s hand like that…
